Robert Pollard was a fourth grade school teacher in Dayton, OH who became one of the most prolific songwriters of our generation. Some of you might not have heard of Robert Pollard or his band Guided by Voices, but it is a project that had been in the works since 1981. Starting out as booze-fueled jams in Bob’s basement, the band became a more cohesive unit and eventually released a series of full-length ep’s using money that, according to Robert Pollard’s Wikipedia page, was from a local credit union.
It wasn’t until 1992 when Bob turned 35 that Propeller was released that Guided by Voices started gaining nationwide attention. Since then Bob has recorded several more albums, one produced by Rik Ocasek from The Cars and many others that have received critical praise from some of the industry’s toughest critics. Between Guided by Voices, his solo releases, and other bands of which he is apart, Robert Pollard has a successful career doing what he loves and age hasn’t stopped him once.
Just because you have to earn a living, it doesn’t mean you must give up your dream. If it is important to you, make the time to hone your craft and keep it going while earning enough money to survive. It took Mr. Pollard 11 years. How long are you willing to pursue your dream?
